The Valley of Vision
Arthur Bennett
Paperback
Description: The strength of Puritan character and life lay in prayer and meditation. In this practice the spirit of prayer was regarded as of first importance and the best form of prayer, for living prayer is the characteristic of genuine spirituality. Yet prayer is also vocal and may therefore on occasions be written. Consequently in the Puritan tradition there are many written prayers and meditations which constitute an important corpus of inspiring devotional literature. Too often ex tempore prayer lacks variety, order and definiteness. The reason for this lies partly in a neglect of due preparation. It is here that the care and scriptural thoroughness which others found necessary in their approach to God may be of help. This book has been prepared not to 'supply' prayers but to prompt and encourage the Christian as he treads the path on which others have gone before.
A selection of prayers and meditations in the Puritan tradition, widely valued since publication in 1975. (See also P.2)

About The Author: Born in 1915, Arthur Bennett converted to Christ as a teenager at a Salvation Army mission. He became part of the caravan evangelism movement, traveling around Britain in a horse-drawn vehicle. In 1940, he was accepted by Clifton Theological College and became ordained in the Church of England. He served parishes for 39 years; lectured at All Nationals Christian College; served as canon at St. Albans Cathedral, and was a rector and theological tutor. Out of all the Arthur Bennett books, The Valley of Vision may be the most well known. It serves as a collection of Puritan prayers, intended to encourage Christians as they tread the path of prayer. These prayers are rich in Scripture but are never formulaic. They have their foundation in confessionalism while being theologically fresh, teaching readers to pray by example.
